Domaine Comte Abbatucci Monte Mare Rouge Cuvée Insolite 2022 is a pale, perfumed Corsican red made from Sciaccarellu, grown on the granite hills of the Taravo valley in southern Corsica. Fragrance and lift do the work here rather than density, and the wine carries plenty of energy for its light frame.

Sour cherry, redcurrant and wild strawberry lead the aromatics, with violet and dried herbs sitting above the fruit. Air brings a savoury edge of juniper, white pepper and something faintly saline, a signature of Sciaccarellu grown within reach of the sea.

The palate is translucent and finely drawn, with tannins that are powdery rather than firm and acidity that keeps everything moving. Farmed biodynamically and fermented with wild yeasts, the 2022 has a lightly reductive, mineral cast to the mid-palate, and finishes long, dry and gently peppery rather than fruit-sweet.

Serve it with a slight chill alongside charcuterie, roast quail, grilled lamb cutlets with rosemary, or tuna tataki. It also handles tomato-based pasta and grilled vegetables far better than most reds of this weight.

Drinking beautifully now and through to around 2030, with the fruit likely to move towards dried cherry and undergrowth after a few more years in the cellar.
