Domaine Arnaud Lambert Saumur Brézé Midi (2022)
1.5L / Brézé, Saumur, Loire Valley / France
Domaine Arnaud Lambert Saumur Brézé Midi 2022 is a dry, taut Chenin Blanc from the Brézé hill in the Loire Valley, grown on tuffeau limestone and made without malolactic fermentation. The 2022 vintage in Saumur was hot and dry through summer before August rain and an early harvest, and the wine carries that ripeness while holding its line, arriving here in magnum.
Quince, poached pear and lemon curd lead the aromatics, with beeswax, chamomile and a chalky, struck-stone edge that becomes clearer as the wine warms in the glass. Air brings out dried apricot and a faint bread-dough note from time on lees.
Fermented and raised largely in tank, Midi keeps its acidity bright and its phenolic grip intact, so the palate is broad through the middle then narrows into a saline, faintly bitter finish that lingers on citrus pith. Texture is the point rather than fruit weight: waxy, dense and drawn out over stony length. The magnum format slows the whole thing down, and there is real benefit in giving this a decant or simply opening it an hour ahead.
Serve with roast chicken and tarragon, pork belly, a whole baked snapper, or hard cheeses such as comté and aged gouda. It also handles gentle spice well, from a mild curry to salt-and-pepper squid.
Drinking well from 2025, and the larger format should carry this Brézé Chenin Blanc comfortably through to 2034 and beyond.
