Fritz Haag's Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese 2023, here in magnum, comes from one of the Mosel's most celebrated south-facing slate slopes.

Expect ripe peach and apricot fruit laced with orange blossom and a mineral, slate-derived undertow. 2023 was a strong vintage on the Mosel, giving fruit with real concentration alongside the acidity Sonnenuhr is known for. The palate carries real sweetness, but it's kept honest by racy acid, so the wine reads as vivid and light-footed rather than heavy. The finish is long, with lingering apricot and a saline mineral snap.

Pair it with Peking duck, a mild green curry, or simply on its own as an aperitif - the acidity makes it a genuine food wine despite the sugar. Blue cheese and this Spätlese are also a classic match. Drinking beautifully now and, in magnum, well worth holding for a decade or more - the format slows development and rewards real patience.
