Friday Tasting: Kilikanoon Reds!

This Friday we're pouring three wines from one of the Clare Valley's most beloved producers — and putting the spotlight firmly on what South Australia does best.

Kilikanoon was founded in 1997 by Kevin Mitchell, a Clare Valley native whose family had been growing grapes there for generations. His winemaking philosophy centres on minimal intervention — no fining, no filtration, and low yields to maximise flavour intensity. Today the estate is regarded as one of the Clare Valley's benchmark producers, and this Friday you can taste exactly why.

We open with the Killerman's Run Shiraz and Killerman's Run GSM — the approachable, entry-point expressions that carry the name of a local legend. The Killerman's Run range is named after Alan Webster, a reclusive bushman who lived alone in the scrubland behind the Kilikanoon cellar after WWII, trapping game and making his own wines in a galvanised lean-to. The Shiraz is elegant and red-fruited, with cherry, anise and mixed spices on the nose, and dense dark fruit, blackberry, sweet plums and peppery spice on the palate. The GSM is a Rhône-inspired blend of Grenache, Shiraz and Mataro, vinified and matured individually in seasoned French oak hogsheads for around 15 months before assemblage, bottled unfined and unfiltered. 

Then we step up to the Covenant Shiraz — Kilikanoon's premium tier. Fruit is hand-picked from six dry-grown vineyards with average vine age of 30 to 40 years, fermented in small open fermenters and gently basket pressed, then matured in French oak barriques. The result is a wine with real depth and cellar potential — black and blueberry fruit, violet, toasted spice and cedar on the nose, with a plush, concentrated palate backed by layers of fine tannins and a sustained finish.
