Tornatore Etna Rosato (2024)
750mL / Sicily / Italy
The Tornatore Etna Rosato 2024 is a dry, pale rosé from the Etna DOC on the volcanic slopes of Sicily, made entirely from Nerello Mascalese. Pitched somewhere between a savoury Provençal pink and something with a bit more fruit weight, it is a rosé that drinks like a light red in disguise.
The colour sits between cherry pink and old rose. Aromas run to wild strawberry, pomegranate and rockmelon, with a lift of dried flowers and a faint saline edge behind the fruit. The palate follows through with red berry and citrus pith rather than anything sweet or confected.
Fermented at cool temperature and rested on fine lees before several months in concrete, the 2024 has a little texture across the middle without losing its snap. Acidity is bright and the finish is dry, chalky and longer than most rosé of this style, with the mineral character Etna fruit tends to bring.
Serve it at around 8 to 10 degrees, in a decent-sized glass so the aromatics open up. Tornatore Etna Rosato works with grilled prawns, vitello tonnato, roast chicken, arancini or a plate of prosciutto and melon. Drink now and through the next two years, though it is at its most vivid while the fruit is fresh.
