Gusbourne Rosé (2019)
750mL / Kent & Sussex / United Kingdom
The Gusbourne Rosé 2019 is a traditional-method sparkling wine from Kent and Sussex, England, with a pale pink hue and several years of development already in bottle. It brings together the freshness of the estate's sparkling style with the added texture that skin contact from red grapes provides.
The nose shows red berries, redcurrant and a touch of citrus, with a savoury, almost biscuity depth that comes from extended lees ageing, plus a faint strawberry note that joins the red fruit as the wine opens in the glass. The palate is fine and layered, with red fruit and a delicate creaminess carried through by a steady stream of bubbles.
Acidity keeps the wine lifted and fresh, and the finish is long, dry and gently spiced rather than sweet.
It pairs naturally with charcuterie, salmon or light red-fruit desserts, where its fruit and acidity both have something to play against, particularly dishes that carry a touch of sweetness of their own.
With several years already in bottle, the 2019 is drinking at a lovely, settled stage right now.
