For our very first masterclass, we're humbled to be showing some of Australia's most authoritative wines, from perhaps the country's most influential winery. We're pleased to be hosting this event alongside Jean Thouvenin from Penfolds.
About Penfolds
Penfolds was founded in 1844 by Dr. Christopher Rawson Penfold and his wife Mary at Magill Estate, Adelaide — originally making fortified "tonic" wines for his patients. Mary later took the reins and grew it into South Australia's largest winery.
The defining moment came in 1951, when chief winemaker Max Schubert, inspired by a trip to Bordeaux, secretly crafted an age-worthy Shiraz that critics initially hated. That wine became Grange — now Australia's most celebrated and collectible.
Penfolds' real signature is philosophy: rather than prizing single vineyards, it blends fruit across South Australian regions (Barossa, Eden Valley, McLaren Vale, Coonawarra) to chase a consistent "house style" — the thinking behind its famous Bin range (Bin 28, 389, 707).
Today Penfolds sits under Treasury Wine Estates, led by Peter Gago, only the fourth Chief Winemaker in its history, and has extended its blending philosophy to vineyards in California and France.
"Built on a wine nobody wanted, and a philosophy nobody else used — blending across regions to chase consistency, not terroir."
