Hither & Yon's Tempranillo 2023 brings a Spanish variety to McLaren Vale's warm coastal climate, and shows the savoury, food-oriented style it is best known for. It is medium garnet in the glass, lighter than the region's Shiraz or Cabernet, and just as inviting to look at.

Red cherry and dried tobacco leaf lead the nose, with a dusty, dried-herb quality underneath that gives it a distinctly savoury character, and a faint leather note that becomes more noticeable with air. The palate is medium-bodied and savoury rather than overtly fruity, with fine tannin and moderate acidity keeping it balanced rather than heavy, and a texture that stays smooth from the first sip to the last.

The finish is dry and earthy, with cherry fruit fading quickly to leave a savoury, herbal note behind on the very end.

It is built for the table — a chorizo and bean stew, grilled pork or a simple tomato-based dish will all suit it well.

It drinks well now, with fine enough tannin that it needs no further time in bottle to show its best.
