Hither & Yon Nero d'Avola (2024)

750mL / McLaren Vale / Australia

Category: Wine
Sub-Category: Red wine

Nero d'Avola is Sicily's signature red grape, and Hither & Yon's 2024 release shows how naturally it suits McLaren Vale's own warm, Mediterranean-adjacent climate. It is a deep, bright ruby in the glass, with an inviting, glossy sheen right to the rim.

Dark cherry and blood plum lead the nose, with a faint liquorice spice underneath adding a touch of savoury interest, and a light dusting of dried herb that shows on the second sip. The palate is medium-bodied and juicy, with soft, approachable tannin that makes it easy to drink young, and a fruit-forward core that keeps every sip generous rather than demanding.

The finish is fruity and of moderate length, closing without the firmness of some of the region's other reds, and no hard edges to work around at all.

It is an easy match for pizza, tomato-based pasta or antipasto, food that calls for a red with juice rather than grip.

It is made for drinking in its youth, with soft tannin that gives it nothing to gain from time in the cellar.
