Hither & Yon Aglianico (2025)
750mL / McLaren Vale / Australia
Aglianico is one of southern Italy's more structured red grapes, and Hither & Yon's 2025 release brings that same firm backbone to a McLaren Vale expression. It is deep, dense purple-red in the glass, with real depth of colour right to the rim.
Dark cherry, black pepper and a savoury, earthy edge define the nose, with the palate following through firm and full-bodied, and a faint dried herb note that sits underneath the darker fruit. Tannin is the defining feature here, grainy and persistent rather than soft, and it frames the fruit rather than sitting alongside it, giving the whole wine a serious, structured feel.
The finish is long and tannic, with dark fruit and pepper lingering after the grip fades, closing dry and savoury right through to the end.
It needs food with weight to match — a slow-braised ragù, char-grilled lamb or a hard, aged pecorino all work well against its structure.
Young and firm now, it has the tannin to reward a few years in the cellar for drinkers who prefer that grip softened.
