Chookshed 2023 is Rusden's Zinfandel from old vines in the Barossa Valley's Vine Vale sub-district, a variety far more common in California than South Australia but one the Barossa's warmth suits well. The style is ripe and generous, with brambly fruit at its core, deep and inky in the glass.

Blackberry, raspberry jam and a peppery spice sit over a warm, slightly raisined edge typical of the variety at full ripeness, with a savoury dried-fig note emerging with air. There is a faint clove-like spice that lingers alongside the darker fruit.

The palate is full-bodied with soft, ripe tannins and a finish that runs warm and spicy rather than tightly structured, the warmth adding to its generous character. There is a lush, almost jammy density through the mid-palate that suits the variety well.

Its generosity suits barbecued or smoked meats especially well - think pulled pork, spiced sausages or a rich barbecue sauce. It also stands up well to a hearty bean and beef chilli.

Chookshed is best enjoyed in its youth, while the brambly fruit is at its most vivid and the spice notes have not faded.
