Wangolina Montepulciano (2024)

750mL / Limestone Coast / Australia

Category: Wine
Sub-Category: Red wine

Wangolina's Montepulciano 2024 is grown on South Australia's Limestone Coast, where maritime cooling gives this central Italian variety more freshness than it typically shows at home. It is a medium to full-bodied red with real depth, deep garnet in colour with a purple-tinged rim.

Dark plum, blackberry and a touch of dried fig lead, with savoury notes of tobacco leaf and dark spice. There is a faint liquorice note that emerges as the wine sits in the glass.

The palate carries soft, rounded tannins and good acidity, giving a savoury, food-ready structure and a finish of moderate length. There is a pleasing chewiness through the mid-palate typical of well-grown Montepulciano.

It suits richer dishes - a slow-cooked ragu, grilled sausages or roasted vegetables with a meaty edge. It also matches well with a simple lamb and rosemary skewer, or a hearty bowl of beef and barley soup on a cold night.

Drink it over the next three to four years while its dark fruit stays fresh and the tobacco-leaf note has not begun to dry out.
