Wangolina Carmenere (2022)

750mL / Limestone Coast / Australia

Category: Wine
Sub-Category: Red wine

Wangolina's Carmenere 2022 is grown on South Australia's Limestone Coast, a maritime-cooled site for a variety best known in Chile, where it was once mistaken for Merlot. It is a medium to full-bodied red with a distinctive savoury character, deep garnet in the glass.

Dark plum and blackcurrant sit alongside the variety's signature green, herbal lift - think capsicum and dried bay leaf - balanced by a touch of dark spice. There is a faint smoky note that adds further complexity as the wine opens.

The palate has firm, ripe tannins and good acidity, with the herbal note carrying through to a long, savoury finish. There is a pleasing density through the mid-palate that keeps the wine feeling substantial.

Match it with grilled red meat, a herb-crusted lamb rack or roasted capsicum dishes that echo its own character. It also suits a simple beef and capsicum stir-fry, or a slow-roasted pork shoulder with herbs and garlic.

Drink it over the next three to five years as the tannins continue to soften and the herbal lift settles into the fruit.
