Fetherston Fetherston Estate Syrah (2021)

750mL / Yarra Valley / Pyrenees / King Valley / Australia

Category: Wine
Sub-Category: Red wine

Peppery and medium-bodied, the 2021 Fetherston Estate Syrah is a cool-climate expression of the variety that sets it apart from its warmer-climate shiraz cousin.

Dark plum and blackberry sit under a distinct cracked-pepper and violet lift, giving the wine real varietal character rather than generic dark fruit, with a faint dried-bay-leaf note adding further savoury lift. The palate is savoury and medium-bodied, with that same peppery spice carrying through.

Tannins are fine to medium, acidity is bright, and the finish stays savoury rather than sweet, with the spice note lingering longest. A few years in bottle have softened the edges without dulling the varietal character, leaving a wine that feels settled rather than raw.

It suits duck, game birds, or roasted vegetables with a peppery or herb-heavy dressing that can meet its own spice head-on.

2021 was widely regarded as a strong, cooler vintage across Victoria, and that freshness shows here; the wine has held its structure well and should continue to drink beautifully for another three to five more years to come.
