School Days 2022 is Rusden's entry-level Shiraz from the Barossa Valley's Vine Vale sub-district, made in a generous, immediately likeable style rather than one built for the cellar. It is the kind of Barossa Shiraz you open without thinking twice, carrying old-vine fruit depth even at this everyday price point, with a bright, inviting garnet hue.

Blackberry, plum and mulberry lead, with a warm, spiced backdrop of clove and a touch of liquorice. A faint dark chocolate note rounds out the nose without adding any sense of heaviness.

The palate is soft and round, tannins gentle rather than gripping, with a finish that is more about ripe fruit than structure. It drinks easily from the first glass, with just enough acidity to keep the fruit from feeling flat.

Match it with sausages off the barbecue, a meat lasagne or a simple cheese board - nothing here needs to be fussy. It is equally at home poured alongside a Sunday roast or a simple bowl of spaghetti bolognese.

There is no need to cellar this one - School Days is best enjoyed within its first two years, while the fruit is at its most generous.
