Tumblong Hills Track Winding Back Shiraz (2023)

750mL / Gundagai / Australia

Category: Wine
Sub-Category: Red wine

Track Winding Back Shiraz 2023 comes from Tumblong Hills' Gundagai vineyard in the South West Slopes of New South Wales, where elevation gives the region's Shiraz a peppery, cool-edged character distinct from warmer inland styles. It sits at medium body rather than the bigger, riper end of Australian Shiraz, with a bright, deep garnet colour.

Blackberry and plum are lifted by black pepper and dried herb, with a savoury, slightly earthy undertone. There is a faint violet-like perfume that lifts the aromatics further.

Tannins are fine and the acidity fresh, giving the palate energy and length rather than sheer weight. The finish carries that peppery spice through to the end, with a lingering savoury note.

It is a versatile match for the table - grilled lamb, a peppered steak or a rich vegetable stew all work well. It also suits a simple roast beef sandwich with mustard, or a plate of grilled mushrooms finished with thyme.

Drink it over the next three to five years as the fruit softens and the spice notes deepen.
