J Block Shiraz 2023 is a single-block bottling from Tumblong Hills in Gundagai, in the South West Slopes of New South Wales, made to showcase one specific parcel of the estate's vineyard. The altitude here gives the wine a cooler, more peppery character than warmer-region Shiraz, with the single-block selection bringing added focus and consistency to the wine, and a deep, saturated garnet colour in the glass.

Blackberry and dark plum are threaded with black pepper, dried thyme and a savoury, earthy depth that builds with time in the glass. There is a faint dark chocolate note that emerges as the wine warms.

The palate is medium to full-bodied, with fine, structured tannins and a long, spice-driven finish. There is real precision here, the single-block focus showing in the wine's clarity of flavour.

It pairs well with peppered steak, slow-roasted lamb or a rich mushroom dish - food that can match its savoury intensity. It also suits a simple char-grilled rib-eye.

Give it a year or two to settle and expect it to drink well for the next five years.
