Torbreck Viognier (2024)

The Torbreck Viognier "Eden Valley" 2024 is a rich, perfumed white that leans into the generous side of the variety without losing its shape. Sourced from Eden Valley fruit, the 2024 is concentrated and detailed, a Viognier with real presence in the glass rather than a light aperitif style.

Apricot and ripe summer stone fruit lead the aromatics, trailed by orange peel, spring blossom and a faint blueberry-and-strawberry lift that is unusual in a white wine. The palate follows through with weight and a churned butter richness across the middle, the flavours arriving slowly and staying put. Texture is the point here. There is a gentle grip through the finish — phenolic chew that gives the wine structure and stops the fruit becoming cloying — and the 13% alcohol keeps everything in proportion. It finishes long, faintly savoury, and drier than the aroma suggests.

Pair it with roast chicken and thyme, pork belly, or a bowl of mussels in cream and saffron. Spiced dishes work well too — Moroccan tagine, mild Thai curry, or a slow-cooked lamb shoulder with apricots. Washed-rind cheese is worth a try if you like a wine to stand up to something pungent. Drink from now through to about 2029. It is expressive and open already, though a year or two in the cellar will build a little honeyed complexity over the fruit.
