Fetherston 'Magnolia' Albariño (2024)
750mL / Yarra Valley / Pyrenees / King Valley / Australia
'Magnolia' is a 2024 Albariño from Fetherston's cool-climate Victorian vineyards, bringing a grape best known from Spain's Galicia region to the state's high country with real fidelity to style.
Lemon and lime zest sit alongside white nectarine and a distinct saline edge, the kind of savoury minerality Albariño is prized for, with a faint white-pepper note adding a little spice to the aromatics. The palate has real texture behind the citrus, with that saline note carrying through rather than fading.
Acidity is high but the body has enough weight to balance it, finishing long and briny rather than sharp. There's a light phenolic grip on the very end too, a texture more typical of the variety's coastal Spanish home than of most Australian whites.
It's built for seafood: oysters, ceviche, or a simple grilled fish with nothing more than lemon and olive oil to let its own saltiness show.
Drink it over the next one to two years while the citrus and saline character are both at their brightest.
