Wangolina Grüner Veltliner (2024)
750mL / Limestone Coast / Australia
Wangolina's Gruner Veltliner 2024 grows on South Australia's Limestone Coast, a maritime-cooled region well suited to this Austrian variety's need for a long, gentle ripening season. It is a dry white with the variety's signature savoury edge, pale straw in colour with a faint green tint.
White pepper and lentil-like spice sit over citrus and green apple, with a faint herbal note reminiscent of celery leaf. There is a subtle stone fruit note underneath that keeps the wine from feeling austere.
The palate is light to medium-bodied, with bright acidity and a peppery, textural finish that sets it apart from more straightforward whites. The pepper note builds through the finish rather than fading quickly.
It is an excellent match for Asian-influenced dishes, roast chicken or a simple schnitzel - its spice and acid handle a range of flavours. It also suits a simple pork and ginger stir-fry, or a plate of steamed dumplings with soy and chilli.
Drink it within the next two years while the peppery lift is most pronounced.
