Wangolina Malvasia Istriana (2024)

750mL / Limestone Coast / Australia

Category: Wine
Sub-Category: White Wine

Wangolina's Malvasia Istriana 2024 grows on South Australia's Limestone Coast, a maritime climate that suits this aromatic variety more commonly found around the Adriatic in Istria and Friuli. It is a dry white with real perfume, without the sweetness the aromatics might suggest, pale gold in the glass.

Apricot, orange blossom and a touch of honey lead the nose, with a savoury, saline edge from the region's sea air. There is a faint ginger-like spice that adds further interest to the aromatics.

The palate is textural and medium-bodied, with fresh acidity balancing its aromatic intensity and a long, dry finish. There is a saline lift on the finish that speaks to the vineyard's closeness to the coast.

Its perfume and texture suit seafood risotto, grilled prawns or a simple plate of cured meats. It also suits a simple apricot and almond tart, or a soft, washed-rind cheese to finish the meal.

Drink it over the next one to two years while the perfume is at its most vivid and the saline lift is freshest.
