Tegernseerhof Bergdistel Grüner Veltliner Smaragd (2024)
750mL / Wachau / Austria
Tegernseerhof Bergdistel Grüner Veltliner Smaragd 2024 is a white wine from the Wachau in Austria, grown on the Bergdistel site and made in the region's richest classification. Compared with a Federspiel wine, this is fuller-bodied and more concentrated, with real depth behind the variety's trademark spice.
White pepper and green apple are still there on the nose, but joined by riper stone fruit, a honeyed, textural note that marks the Smaragd style, and a faint smokiness that develops further with air. The palate has real weight — a noticeable step up from the estate's lighter-tier wines — with ripe orchard fruit and that peppery lift carried on a broader, more layered mid-palate.
Acidity keeps the wine balanced despite its richness, and the finish is long and spiced, with pepper and stone fruit lingering well after the swallow.
Its weight suits richer dishes — roast pork, mushroom dishes or aged hard cheeses, food that can meet the wine's extra weight.
The 2024 is already generous but has the structure to develop further over the next few years.
