Category: Wine
Sub-Category: White Wine

Formally known as Sand Dollar Pinot Gris.

Winemaker Dominic Maxwell and viticulturist Nick Gill are rising stars of the industry and this stunning Waipara Valley estate on the Omihi slopes with its clay-limestone soils and free draining gravels is perfect for grape growing.

An exceptional North facing site, limestone hills slope down to clay, the perfect combination for growing wines with minerality and concentration.

Opulent layers of autumnal fruits, white peach & golden kiwi. The palette shows richness and concentration with opulent layers of autumnal fruits, white peach & golden kiwi. A long, luscious finish leads to a lingering salinity.

Accolades & Awards:

Winemaker Dom Maxwell was awarded NZ Winemaker of the Year in 2018, Gourmet Traveller Wine Magazine awarded Greystone Winery “Vineyard of the Year” at the 2016 New Zealand Organic Wine Awards.

Season Notes:

Greystone Pinot Gris is grown on the flat blocks at the west of the vineyard, on windblown loess and clay soils - there are two Pinot Gris clones: 2/15 and 2/21, originally from Giesenheim.

The growing season started cool and cloudy which led to a reduction in flowering & fruit set meaning lower than average yields.

An inclement summer presented challenges throughout the growing season, however with attention to detail in the vineyards & the organic vines ability to naturally combat seasonal variation, they Greystone team were able to ripen the fruit evenly & harvest clean fruit showing great concentration and beautiful acidity.

Fruit was harvested in the cool of the early morning to retain freshness and acidity.
