Grenache Mataro 2023 pairs McLaren Vale's two classic warm-climate red grapes, with Mataro adding structure and savoury depth to Grenache's brighter red fruit. The result is deeper in colour and weight than a straight Grenache, sitting closer to a full red than a lighter, juicier style.

Raspberry and redcurrant sit over darker plum and clove-like spice, with a meaty, savoury undertone that separates it from lighter, purely fruity styles, and a faint dried fig note tucked in behind the primary fruit. The palate is medium-bodied, with firmer tannin than Grenache alone usually shows, and a savoury grip that builds steadily toward the finish rather than announcing itself early.

The finish is long and spiced, with dried herb and dark fruit lingering together well after the last sip has gone.

It is a strong match for a spiced lamb tagine, charcuterie board or anything with a peppery, savoury edge to it.

It has the structure to hold for a few years yet, though there is plenty to enjoy in its fruit right now.
