Rusden Driftsand GSM (2024)
750mL / Barossa Valley / Australia
Driftsand 2024 is Rusden's Grenache-Shiraz-Mataro blend from old vines in the Barossa Valley's Vine Vale sub-district, a classic combination that leans on Grenache's brightness rather than Shiraz's power. It is a medium-bodied red with immediate appeal, bright ruby in colour with a fragrant lift as soon as it is poured.
Red plum, mulberry and raspberry sit over baking spice and a touch of dried herb, with a savoury, earthy thread running underneath that keeps the fruit honest. A faint whiff of dried orange peel adds further interest as the glass opens.
The tannins are soft and fine, the finish more about texture and spice than grip. It is a supple wine that drinks easily without feeling simple, with good length for its weight and a lingering peppery note.
Lightly chill it in warmer months and pour with barbecued sausages, a charcuterie board or a Mediterranean-leaning vegetable spread. It also matches well with a simple roast chicken or a plate of grilled haloumi.
There is no need to hold this back - Driftsand is made to be opened in its first two or three years, while the fruit is at its most vivid.
