Dominus estate Dominus (2014)
750mL / Napa Valley / USA
Dominus 2014 is a Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant Bordeaux-style blend from Napa Valley, made by a house founded on the Bordeaux expertise of Christian Moueix of Pomerol and long regarded as one of the valley's benchmark wines. Now over a decade old, this bottle shows real depth and settled complexity.
Cassis and black cherry have softened into dried fruit, cedar and a touch of tobacco leaf, with an earthy, graphite-like undertone that speaks to real bottle development. The palate is layered rather than fruit-forward, secondary and tertiary notes now well to the fore and lending real complexity to every sip.
Tannins have resolved into a fine, velvety texture, and the finish is long, savoury and seamless, with none of the youthful grip a younger vintage would still carry.
This calls for equally serious food — a dry-aged ribeye, venison with a dark jus, or a mature, washed-rind cheese.
It's drinking beautifully right now, at a mature, fully resolved stage that rewards a slow, unhurried evening rather than more time spent waiting in the cellar.
