Dominus estate Dominus (2016)
750mL / Napa Valley / USA
Dominus 2016 is the same Cabernet Sauvignon-led Bordeaux-style blend from Napa Valley, made by the house Christian Moueix of Pomerol established to bring genuine Bordeaux thinking to California, but from a vintage with fewer years in bottle than the 2014. It shows more fruit and less settled complexity — a wine in the middle of its journey rather than at full maturity.
Blackcurrant and black cherry remain vivid, with cedar, dried herb and a graphite-like minerality building alongside rather than dominating. The palate carries real density, dark fruit and savoury spice woven together with more tension than the older vintage shows, the finish gaining length with air.
Tannins are firm but increasingly polished, framing a long, structured finish that still has room to soften further with time.
Pair it with roast beef, lamb with rosemary, a rich mushroom and truffle dish, or a well-aged hard cheese to match its evolving complexity.
It's drinking well now but will continue to gain complexity for another five to ten years, evolving steadily with each year in the cellar.
