The Tolpuddle Pinot Noir 2025 is a fine-boned, aromatic red from a single vineyard in Tasmania's Coal River Valley, planted back in 1988 and given over entirely to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Perfume rather than power is the point here, though there is more depth in the glass than the pale-to-mid ruby colour suggests.

Aromas lead with red cherry and pomegranate, then turn savoury — crushed violets, dried thyme, a twist of white pepper and something faintly sappy, like snapped green stems. The palate follows the same line: bright morello cherry and blood orange up front, darker plum underneath, all of it carried on the cool, gently sloping site's natural acidity.

Tannins are fine and slightly grainy, sitting close to the fruit rather than framing it from a distance. The wine has real drive through the middle and finishes long and clean, with a savoury, almost stony note that lingers well after the fruit has faded. Weight sits comfortably in the medium range.

Serve it lightly chilled with duck breast, roast quail, mushroom risotto or a plate of charcuterie. Tasmanian salmon, cooked rare, works better with this wine than most reds would manage.

The Tolpuddle Pinot Noir 2025 drinks beautifully now with an hour in the decanter, and the acid structure and tannin quality suggest it will reward cellaring through to around 2035.
