Fetherston 'Iris' Chardonnay (2023)
750mL / Yarra Valley / Pyrenees / King Valley / Australia
Texture and tension take priority over fruit weight in 'Iris', Fetherston's 2023 Chardonnay from cool-climate Victorian vineyards.
Lemon and grapefruit sit against green apple and a faint flinty note, giving the nose a tighter, more mineral edge than a broader style would show. A subtle chalky quality runs underneath the citrus, adding to that mineral impression, and a faint hay-like note appears the longer the glass sits open. The palate carries that same citrus drive, with texture doing more work than overt fruit.
Acidity is bright and persistent, the finish is long, and there's a saline quality that lingers well after the fruit itself has faded. Nothing about it feels soft; even the texture reads as structure rather than richness, and there's no sense of the wine relying on fruit sweetness to make its case.
It's a natural match for shellfish, oysters, or a simply roasted chicken with lemon, dishes where the wine's acidity and texture both have real work to do.
Drink it over the next two to three years, while the tension between fruit and texture is still balanced.
