Greywacke Archive Chardonnay (2017)

Greywacke Archive Chardonnay 2017 is the following vintage in the estate's aged chardonnay release, and a noticeably riper, more generous wine than the 2016 alongside it. Where that vintage leans lean and nutty, 2017 carries more flesh, the result of a warmer, more generous growing season.

Stone fruit and baked apple sit forward on the nose, with honey and toasted nuts building underneath from the bottle age, along with a faint waxy note. The palate is rounder and more overtly fruity than the 2016, with real weight through the middle and a soft, creamy texture.

Acidity is a touch softer here too, giving a broader, more textural finish that still holds together well despite the ripeness, closing on a gentle nutty note that lingers well after the glass is empty.

Its generosity suits richer dishes: roast pork, a creamy gratin, or duck with fruit-based sauces all work well alongside it, the wine's roundness matching the food rather than fighting it.

It is drinking beautifully now and has little upside left to gain from further cellaring.
